Jane Eyre: The Age Gap

Hi guys,

This is something I've always wondered about in Jane Eyre: the 20-year age gap. When I first read the book, the ending was sort of spoiled for me - I knew that Jane and Rochester would fall for each other and get married. So when I got to the part when you learn their ages (their early conversations) - man, I was shocked. Especially because Rochester kept on stressing how "he was old eno

How would you die in a Shaekspeare play chart

Hey everyone. I'm a high school teacher and last year as we were reading Julius Caesar I came across this fun chart about how you would die in a Shakespeare play. It was one of those types where you match up your intitials/birth month etc. to certain words to get your results. My students had a lo of fun with it, but I can't find it again. Reading Pendennis

I am reading Thackery's Pendennis and enjoying it. Anybody else read it or know it?

Early scenes are set in a fictional version of East Devon where I grew up, so that amuses me.

The hero goes to university at "Oxbridge". Is that the eariest usage of that term to include both ancient English universities? (Thackeray here means Cambridge where he studied,)

Looking for feedback on four short stories

Greetings,

This is my first post on these forums. Recently, I published a "novella," which, originally, consisted of four short stories. My style is unique and highly experimental: something along the lines of avant garde prose poetry. I'm basically just looking for feedback from experienced readers concerning how I can improve as a writer. The book is free and will remain so until this Sunday,

Jane Eyre vs Pride and Prejudice

Hi guys,

I am a huge fan of the book Jane Eyre. For starters, there's Jane herself, who I admire more than anything. Her strength, independence, and piety, despite everything life throws at her (being plain and poor, the cruelty of her relatives, the death of Helen Burns, Mr Rochester's deceit), is amazing. Her counterpart, Mr. Rochester, is just as perfect. Brooding, sarcastic, passiona

Couples in bed

I just wanted to write something about this, because I find it ever such a nice touch by Trollope. It's something I haven't come across (so far) in classic literature. Most authors seem to limit themselves to the 'proper' places, even for married couples, and forego the only really private room they have. Most of them therefore don't go further than private moments on strolls or in drawing rooms.

Aphorism #46 Master your Antipathies.

We often allow ourselves to take dislikes, and that before we know anything of a person. At times this innate yet vulgar aversion attaches Itself to eminent personalities. Good sense masters this feeling, for there is nothing more discreditable than to dislike those better thanourselves. As sympathy with great men en-nobles us, so dislike to them degrades us.

Why does the academy award the nobel prize in literature to obscure writers?
