The reflection of a ground floor window reveals the aging of our main character, Gerty, as she gazes upon the glazed, riany grass. The setting is rural America, during the 21st century. Girty is different from her peers, she possess a kind of moral instinct fall superior to her peers (10 year old children) and is handicapped by her intellect to an extent. Bored, peering out a ground floor window, Gerty ponders subjects such as Interstellar Exploration, and the future of Planet Earth under it's current abuse. She then ties in her own hardships and intertwines them with Galactic hypotheses. For example, Gerty's mother, Jennifer Fuller, was abandoned by her parents at a very young age. Later in life Jennifer, still clearly affected by her childhood abandonment, struggled to trust people and grew up with very little social interaction. As a result of her self induced exile, which arose organically from traumatic social neglect, Jennifer became lonely. When she reached adulthood, Jennifer's lack of social interaction started to manifest itself as physical stigmata. She became very anxious and overly prudent in hopes of perfecting herself; attempting to attract more social attention.
Whether her anxiety started of her own accord, or from simple biological degradation of the psyche, or a combination of both, is unknown even to Jennifer but, whatever the origins, the effects were undeniable.
She began to dress very well, sporting "smart" trendy designer clothes, and changed her personality from it's natural reservedness to boisterous loudness.
As intended, Jennifer made new friends quickly and began to flourish socially. After about a year of increased social emphasis Jennifer became more comfortable with her new found friends and her anxiety subsided. Slowly, she began to revert to her former practices wearing banal clothes and returning to her naturally mild temperament. With this reversion however, Jennifer noticed her friends pulling away, creating excuses not to interact with Jennifer. Jennifer, being a well informed lady, because of her feverish reading during her self-induced exile, understood why her friends were pulling away. She hypothesized that, because she had created fr herself a pretentious persona the friends she attracted were pretentious as well, more a friend of her boisterous nature and bold clothing than of Jennifer herself
