Hey guys,
I have started my new novel, and am posting new chapters to it every few days. So far the first three chapters are up on my blog, the text can be found here: https://lightanddark2016.wordpress.c...and-dark-text/
I have pasted the first chapter below, give it a look (really short, easy to read)! See if you like it. If you do, please be sure to check in every week for the new chapters! Share it with your friends too please. It would really help out. Feedback is always welcome.
Chapter 1
“There are times, I think, when God has told us to kill a man” thought Marty, watching the corpse of the man he had shot and killed lower into the ground in the shroud of rain and sorrow.
“And I was sure that was what he wanted, wasn’t I? The signs were all there. They screamed at me. I had no choice. When our father tells us to do something, what but follow through can we do? It is not my role to question his will, all I must do is follow it.”
Marty looked onto the crowds of people that were in front of him. He saw Johnny T. looking at him, and he knew what Johnny T. was thinking. But to look at Johnny T. would almost be as bad as a confession. Johnny T. wanted a confession. “It’s funny. It’s easy for one to say ‘follow the will of God!’ with fervency so long as the will of God is aligned with his interests. But when God tells you to do something that’s repugnant, that burns every muscle in your bone, it’s not falalalala any more now is it? I trust my God. He told me to do something so I did it. It was horrible. I didn’t know it would lead to this. And I don’t know what more it will lead to. But I had faith. I had faith that it would get me to a good place. I had faith that my God hears my prayers. I had faith that God knows what he’s doing up there. Is it not times like these that test our faith? I went off of my faith. I took a leap of faith. I can’t be blamed.”
The procession was almost over. The rain drizzled constantly. The song of the chorus could be heard. The city flag fluttered high above. The guard of soldiers with their guns and uniforms stood in a row behind the coffin. Sorrow pervaded. Marty smiled softly. A change came over him. A tear came from him. He saw the crying family. He heard the eulogy. He remembered the smile, of the man, he had murdered. More vibrant in his mind than in the pictures that surrounded the scene. An instant of understanding overcame. He closed his eyes, then opened them.
The Leper, who had been hidden behind a building on the main street, walked up to him. They stood by each other and watched as prayers were sung and thought. Both were silent. All other men and women at the funeral were united in thought and in prayer. These two were united in silence. This silence lasted for a few minutes, perhaps nearly ten.
“See what you have made me descend to?” whispered Marty.
The Leper stood silently. “It’s business my friend. If you don’t want to fall, don’t stand near the edge of the cliff. You brought this on yourself. You gave me dirt. I use dirt. That’s how the world works. Don’t forget it.” The Leper turned her head and looked at him. She reached into her trench coat, and pulled out a small envelope. Her eyes intensified. “Besides, I’m generous. I’m giving you money. So shut up, don’t complain. Don’t ask questions. Don’t be a rebel. You agreed. Don’t go running to your detective friend over there. If you do, you know what’s going to happen. If you’re caught, and you say something, you know what’s going to happen. Take this money. Leave quietly, and remember our agreement.”
Marty bit his lip. He sucked on his teeth. He ripped the package from her hands.
Marty opened his mouth, closed it, then opened it again:
“I’m gonna tell you something. And you better remember it. God gives all his due. God gives all his due.”
Marty walked away. The Leper smiled. The funeral was over. Rain fell.
